HPB Robotics case number 350 at RSCH was a great example of collaboration and teamwork – complex combined OG and HPB procedure with 2 consultants and 2 trainees.

Learning points:

• Dual-console robotic training is much easier on the coronaries than laparoscopy – even if you don’t need it, the take all button is there and like dual-control in a learner car.
• Much easier using the pointers down the viewer too, and the ability to demonstrate the intended next step. Plus you don’t have to waste time if the trainer needs to step in and can take instant control, and allows part-performance of procedures in a structured way.
• Also easier is knowing that the trainee has completed a rigorous pre-procedure sim and practical course and been patient-side (as well as doing some more straightforward cases) so understands the global picture in theatre.
• Specialties using the robot together is a good way of seeing tips that might be applicable to your own practice.
